The Lady Chevrons suffered a 99-run defeat to West Indies Women in the opening One-Day International of their three-match series at Harare Sports Club on Thursday.
Chasing a daunting target of 300, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 200 in 43.3 overs despite a determined 86 from wicketkeeper-batter Modester Mupachikwa.
Mupachikwa provided the backbone of the Zimbabwe innings as wickets tumbled at regular intervals around her. She faced 106 deliveries, striking seven fours and a six, but was eventually the last batter dismissed, bowled by Aaliyah Alleyne with the hosts on 200.
Zimbabwe's chase got off to a cautious start before Sharne Mayers briefly changed the tempo. Mayers smashed Alleyne for a six and two consecutive fours in the sixth over, but her counterattack ended in the following over when she was caught by Realeanna Grimmond off Deandra Glasgow for 21.
Kelis Ndhlovu added 15 before falling to Ashmini Munisar, while Mupachikwa found an important partner in Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano. The pair added 49 for the third wicket to take Zimbabwe to 100 before Mugeri-Tiripano was dismissed for 26.
Mupachikwa continued to fight, putting together partnerships with Beloved Biza and captain Josephine Nkomo, but Zimbabwe's hopes faded when they slipped from 152 for five to 181 for nine.
The Lady Chevrons' lower order could not provide the support Mupachikwa needed, and Alleyne eventually ended her resistance to complete a three-wicket haul.
Alleyne finished with three wickets for 44 runs, while Munisar and Afy Fletcher claimed two wickets each as the West Indies attack closed out the match.

Earlier, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews produced a stunning batting display to put her side firmly in control.
Matthews smashed a career-best 182 from 156 balls, including 26 fours and two sixes, as West Indies posted 299 for six after opting to bat.
She shared an opening stand of 128 with Grimmond, who contributed 53, before Zimbabwe finally made a breakthrough in the 24th over.
Francisca Chipare then dismissed Stafanie Taylor with a slower delivery, but Matthews continued to dominate. She reached her century from 108 balls before accelerating sharply, scoring her next 50 runs from just 32 deliveries.
Her 182 became the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in women's ODI cricket, surpassing Taylor's previous record of 171 against Sri Lanka in 2013.
Matthews added 71 with Chinelle Henry before Chipare bowled Henry for 19. Tendai Makusha finally brought Matthews' remarkable innings to an end with a yorker from the first ball of the final over.
Chipare finished with two wickets for 57 runs, while Beloved Biza and Nyasha Gwanzura also claimed wickets. Olinder Chare was Zimbabwe's most economical bowler before being forced off temporarily after being struck on the chin by a fiercely struck return drive.
The result gives West Indies Women a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, which forms part of the ICC Women's Championship.
