Division One outfit Scotland Queens are relishing the opportunity to test their mettle against top-flight opposition in the newly introduced Munhumutapa Cup, following a thrilling tournament draw that paired them against a Premier Soccer League side.
Speaking after the draw ceremony, Scotland Queens Chairperson Michel Williams expressed immense pride in her team's trajectory and highlighted the broader significance of the tournament for women’s football in Zimbabwe.
"I would say it's an honor to actually play because since we are still in the Division One right now, we're in the Northern region. For us to be playing against a team that's in the Premier League, I'm actually honored, and we' are looking forward to that game," said Williams.
Despite currently competing in the Northern Region Division One, Scotland Queens enter the fixture with fierce ambition. Williams made it clear that while her side respects their higher-tier opponents, they are not merely participating to make up the numbers.
"Definitely, Scotland Queens we're in it to win it," she added with confidence.
The Munhumutapa Cup has drawn widespread praise for its inclusive structure, offering lower-tier and women's clubs a national stage to showcase their talent. Williams singled out the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and the nation's leadership for backing the initiative and promoting equity in sports.
"I would want to thank ZIFA. I would also like to extend our gratitude to the President himself, giving us an honor as women, because women, we actually are taken for granted, but this actually has shown that we are at the same level as men," Williams noted. "So I just want to extend my gratitude to each and everyone behind the scenes that are organizing this Munhumutapa Cup."
As the showdown approaches, all eyes will be on the Northern Region side to see if they can pull off a classic cup upset against their Premier League counterparts.
