Relegation Rivals Renew Fight in Munhumutapa Cup

The relegation fight in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League has spilled into the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, with Agama FC set to renew their rivalry with Bulawayo Chiefs following the tournament draw held at Golden Confer.

The two sides were paired against each other, bringing back memories of their battles in the 2026 Premier Soccer League season.

For Agama, the cup tie presents an opportunity to change the narrative after struggling against Amakhosi Amahle in the league.

Bulawayo Chiefs defeated Agama in both meetings during the first and second rounds of the 2026 PSL campaign, leaving the newly promoted side searching for answers against their fellow survival candidates.

The latest meeting, however, comes with different stakes. While league points remain the ultimate prize in the fight for survival, the Munhumutapa Cup has provided Agama with a platform to prove that they are capable of competing against established top-flight opposition.

Agama CEO Entrodge Usayi believes the knockout encounter will be a different story, insisting that his team has strengthened significantly since their previous defeats.

“I am happy to be drawn with Bulawayo Chiefs. We have faced them twice and they defeated us, however, this time it will be difficult for them to defeat us with the players which we have signed,” said Usayi.

Usavi  also dismissed suggestions that his side is destined for an immediate return to Division One.

“Even to those people who think we are going back to D1, no, we are here to stay,” Usayi added.

The clash has all the ingredients of a survival showdown. Bulawayo Chiefs, who returned to the top flight after promotion, have been battling to establish themselves among Zimbabwe’s elite clubs and have openly acknowledged the challenge of adapting to Premier Soccer League football.

Amakhosi Amahle’s advantage has been their ability to compete physically and maintain consistency in key moments, while Agama’s biggest challenge has been turning promising performances into results. Their previous meetings suggest Chiefs have held the psychological edge, but cup football often provides opportunities for underdogs to rewrite the script.
