In the heart of Zengeza 3 Extension in Chitungwiza, a football academy established just over two years ago is quietly transforming the lives of young people, using sport as a pathway to discipline, personal growth and opportunity.
Founded in April 2024 by Joshua Makoni, New Life Junior Academy has rapidly grown into one of the community's most promising youth development initiatives. Based at Rehoboth Mabamba Ground, the academy now caters to more than 150 young players, providing not only football training but also guidance aimed at shaping responsible future leaders.
The academy recently took a significant step forward by joining the Harare Elite Junior Development League (HEJDL), a move expected to expose its players to higher levels of competition and create opportunities for talent development.
Academy representative Talent Zhira, popularly known as Billy ZW, said New Life Junior Academy was established with a broader vision than simply producing talented footballers.
"We joined the Harare Elite Junior Development League this year. Our mission is to empower and develop young people in our community through football, discipline and academic support," said Zhira.
He said the academy places strong emphasis on helping children make positive choices during their formative years.

"We are encouraging kids to refrain from drug and substance use so that they use their time away from school wisely," he said.
Beyond keeping young people engaged in constructive activities, the academy is also focused on identifying and nurturing talent capable of competing on bigger stages.
"We are identifying talent because our ultimate goal is to compete at the international level," Zhira said.
Parents have welcomed the academy's efforts, describing it as an institution that is helping shape well-rounded young people.
One parent said the academy's impact extends far beyond football.
"New Life Junior is doing what some schools fail to do, which is shaping not just athletes but future leaders," the parent said.
As Zimbabwe continues to grapple with challenges such as youth unemployment and drug and substance abuse, community-based initiatives like New Life Junior Academy are providing an important alternative for young people.
With a growing membership, a commitment to discipline and academic support, and ambitions that stretch beyond local competition, the academy is positioning itself as a beacon of hope in Chitungwiza while laying the foundation for the next generation of football stars who could one day represent Zimbabwe on the international stage.
