Tinubu positions himself for re-election bid in 2027

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to contest for a second and final four-year term after securing a decisive victory in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries.

Party officials announced the results after the weekend vote, showing Tinubu overwhelmingly defeating his only challenger, little-known aspirant Stanley Osifo. Tinubu reportedly secured nearly 11 million votes, while Osifo managed just over 16,000.

The primaries, held on Saturday, confirmed Tinubu as the APC’s flagbearer ahead of the general election scheduled for January, further consolidating his position within the ruling party.

Tinubu, who came into office in 2023, has been credited by some international investors for pushing through major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, deregulation of foreign exchange markets, and tax system reforms aimed at stabilising public finances.

His path to re-election has also been strengthened by a weakened opposition front, after efforts to form a unified challenger coalition reportedly collapsed earlier this month.

He previously won the 2023 presidential election against his main rivals, a contest that was challenged in court over allegations of irregularities, though he maintained the victory was legitimate.
