Bulawayo Musical to Bring Mzilikazi's Story to the Stage

Production set for September 2027 premiere, with auditions opening in July

A major new theatrical production chronicling the founding of the Ndebele nation is in development, with its creative team announcing a soft launch of Mzilikazi: The General Who Defied Shaka Zulu, a full-scale musical that traces the life of Mzilikazi ka Mashobane from exiled orphan to nation-builder.

The production is the work of some of Zimbabwe's most recognised cultural creatives, led by Albert Nyathi as Executive Producer and Director, with playwright Thabani Moyo authoring the script. The premiere is targeted for September 2027, timed to coincide with commemorations of the iconic king, known as Inkanyamba, the Great Elephant of the North. Auditions are scheduled for July and August this year.

"This is more than theatre; it is the preservation of the heartbeat of our ancestors," said Nyathi. "By staging these encounters, we are ensuring that the complexities of our history are remembered with dignity and power."

The narrative centres on the pivotal moment when Mzilikazi, then a general serving under Shaka Zulu ka Senzangakhona, refused to surrender tributary cattle, the "jewels of the veld", to the Zulu king. That act of defiance set in motion an extraordinary migration across the savannah, during which Mzilikazi outmanoeuvred Shaka's elite uMbelebele regiments before ultimately establishing his kingdom north of the Limpopo River.

Beyond the drama of military and political survival, the production frames Mzilikazi's legacy as fundamentally a story of nation-building, documenting how the Khumalo, Nzuza, Sotho-Tswana, Kalanga, Venda, Tonga, Nambya and other peoples were drawn into a unified Ndebele identity. Central to the production is Mzilikazi's historic proclamation: "We are now one people... No man shall look down on another... We are all AmaNdebele."

Audiences can expect an immersive, multisensory experience drawing on authentic performance traditions, indlamu, isitshikitsha and amabhiza among the featured dances, alongside synchronised spear-and-shield choreography and ritualistic storytelling. The staging will also feature encounters between Mzilikazi and historical figures including the missionary Robert Moffat and the medicine-king Magodonga.

The production also carries an explicit corrective intent as the team describes the musical as addressing historical misconceptions and misinformation about the Ndebele people and their origins.

The writeshop that initiated script development was funded by Kingdom Blue Funeral Service, headed by Dr. Brilliant Ncube. Cultural historians and community leaders are credited with contributing to a script process aimed at balancing historical accuracy with, in the production's own framing, the iron resolve of the Ndebele spirit.

The broader production team includes Matesu Dube as Assistant Artistic Director, Beauty Ndlovu handling administration and logistics, Ezra Sibanda leading media and publicity, and Lenox Lizwi Mhlanga managing stakeholder relations.
