Man in court over US$18k Southerton car break-in theft

 

A 57-year-old Harare man appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing theft charges after detectives allegedly tracked a stolen cellphone to him following a vehicle break-in at a Southerton business premises.

Moses Mupfuki of Glen View 8 is accused of smashing a vehicle window and stealing a handbag containing US$18 000 and two cellphones.

The complainant is Rene Wheeler (57).

The State alleges that on March 12 at around 2pm, Wheeler parked her Toyota Hilux double cab at the car park of Red Den Farming Agri Solutions in Southerton after securing all doors and windows before entering the shop to conduct business.

During her absence, Mupfuki allegedly used an unknown object to smash the vehicle’s front passenger window and stole a leather handbag that had been left on the seat.

The handbag reportedly contained US$18 000 in cash, a Samsung A71 cellphone and an iPhone 8 Plus.

On April 10, 2026, detectives applied for a warrant of search and seizure targeting the stolen mobile devices.

The warrant was forwarded to mobile network service providers, who supplied information identifying the current user of the Samsung A71 as Mupfuki.

Detectives later located and arrested the accused, who was allegedly found in possession of the stolen Samsung cellphone.

The total value stolen is US$18 000.

Mupfuki is expected to appear in court again on May 4, 2026.
