In a sweeping move to stabilise the nation’s primary collective management organisation, the entire board of the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association has been dismissed with immediate effect.
The ousting of the board, which was formerly led by Alexio Gwenzi, follows a series of damning findings regarding systemic governance and operational failures. Authorities cited a complete breakdown of institutional integrity, specifically highlighting a lack of fiduciary responsibility and significant concerns regarding the legal standing and legitimacy of the sitting board.

The investigation revealed opaque accounting practices and poor financial transparency regarding royalty collections and disbursements. Furthermore, the board was found to have taken actions deemed entirely inconsistent with ZIMURA’s core mandate of supporting and protecting local artists.
This intervention is viewed as a necessary house-cleaning exercise intended to restore artist confidence and ensure that royalties reach their rightful owners rather than being lost to administrative mismanagement.
As part of the immediate transition, all former board members have been ordered to cease their duties and surrender all documents, digital assets, and materials to an interim administrator within seven days. This administrator will assume full control of ZIMURA’s daily operations to restore order and oversee the association’s affairs while further processes unfold.
Authorities have indicated that additional legal or administrative actions may follow as investigations continue to uncover the full extent of the governance breakdown.
