Zimbabwe recorded 337 road traffic accidents and 30 deaths during the 2026 Easter holidays, with fatalities rising despite a marked decline in the total number of crashes.
Data released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reveals that while the total volume of accidents decreased from 384 in 2025 to 337 in 2026, the severity of these incidents worsened. Fatal accidents rose slightly from 21 to 22 over the same period.
The statistics highlight a concerning trend, although fewer collisions occurred, the death toll climbed from 24 to 30. Conversely, the number of people injured saw a sharp decline, falling from 178 to 104, suggesting that the accidents which did occur were significantly more lethal.

The police further elaborated on the rise in mortality:
“Of these, 22 were fatal accidents resulting in 30 deaths, compared to 21 fatal accidents in 2025 which claimed 24 lives.”
In a positive development for the transport sector, the ZRP noted that no major road traffic accidents involving public service vehicles were recorded throughout the holiday. This has been attributed to improved regulatory compliance among bus and taxi operators.
Despite this progress, the holiday was overshadowed by a devastating single-vehicle tragedy involving a private car.
“On 2 April 2026, a fatal road traffic accident was recorded where six family members were killed when a Toyota Corolla vehicle had a head-on collision with a truck at the 246 kilometre peg along the Harare-Masvingo Road,” the ZRP reported.
