Police have arrested a 36-year-old Epworth woman following widespread outrage over a viral video showing the abuse of a young boy.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the suspect, identified as Mercy Kawesa of Overspill, Epworth in Harare, is the child’s mother. Her arrest comes after authorities launched an appeal to identify and locate her when the disturbing footage began circulating on social media.
In the video, Kawesa is seen assaulting the child, striking him with a cooking stick before forcing his hands onto an open gas flame. The incident triggered strong public reaction, with many calling for swift action against the perpetrator.
According to police, Kawesa claimed she was punishing her son for allegedly stealing items from a nearby tuck shop.

Earlier, the ZRP had issued a statement condemning the incident and urging members of the public to assist in identifying the woman, warning that serious charges could follow.
“The ZRP has taken note of a disturbing viral video involving a child abuse incident circulating on social media platforms in which a woman is clearly seen assaulting a minor and forcing the child to touch a blazing gas stove,” the police said.
Authorities also called on relatives or guardians of the child to come forward and report the matter to aid investigations.
“The ZRP assures the public that once the suspect is arrested, she will face the full wrath of the law, including charges of attempted murder,” the statement read.
The case has once again drawn attention to child protection concerns, with calls for stronger intervention and awareness to prevent abuse within homes.
