
A 44-year-old woman, Success Kudyarawanza, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of possessing copper scrap without authorisation.
According to court documents, police detectives received a tip-off on March 1, 2026, that Kudyarawanza was transporting scrap copper from Glendale to Harare with the intention of selling it.
Acting on the information, detectives conducted surveillance at Gazaland Scrap Yard in Highfields, Harare, where they observed a DAF 10-tonne truck arriving and offloading cargo.

Kudyarawanza was seen disembarking from the front passenger seat while carrying a white sack. Detectives approached her and conducted a search, recovering scrap copper wires weighing 7 kilograms and valued at US$33.56.
When questioned, Kudyarawanza failed to produce a certificate authorising her to possess or trade in copper, leading to her arrest.
The court subsequently found her guilty of the offence and sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment.
