1.5 Million Children Targeted in Nationwide Bilharzia Elimination Drive

Zimbabwe has launched a major health campaign targeting nearly 1.5 million children in a decisive push to eliminate schistosomiasis, commonly known as bilharzia, as a public health threat.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has rolled out the National Mass Drug Administration programme for schistosomiasis from February 16 to 21, 2026, focusing on children aged five to 14 years in seven rural provinces.

Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Midlands, Manicaland, Matabeleland South and Masvingo have been identified as priority areas under the nationwide intervention.

The Ministry said the campaign is a critical public health initiative targeting children aged five to 14, with the goal of eliminating schistosomiasis as a public health concern in Zimbabwe.

A total of 1,477,966 children are expected to receive free treatment using praziquantel during the six-day drive.

The Ministry said the free treatment will be administered at the nearest health facility, primary and secondary schools, or static health points, underscoring a school- and community-based approach designed to maximise coverage.

Schistosomiasis remains one of Zimbabwe’s most persistent neglected tropical diseases, particularly affecting children in rural and water-prone communities. If left untreated, the disease can cause chronic illness, organ damage and impaired growth.

The Ministry described the programme as “an extensive school and community-based intervention” and “a significant milestone towards eliminating schistosomiasis and improving the health and wellbeing of children in the targeted areas.”

The campaign is being implemented with support from key partners. The Higherlife Foundation has provided financial and technical assistance, while the World Health Organization has donated the required medication for the MDA.

The Ministry is urging parents and guardians in the targeted provinces to ensure eligible children receive treatment during the campaign period, as Zimbabwe intensifies efforts to eliminate preventable diseases and strengthen child health outcomes nationwide.
