Before the performance, the cast participated in a two-day intensive dramaturgical workshop led by Almasi Programs Director Gideon Jeph Wabvuta, exploring the text and structure of Hansberry’s landmark play.

“A Raisin in the Sun is timeless and universally relevant, reminding us that even amidst life’s struggles, hope fuels our existence. When all seems lost, our integrity is our last line of salvation,” said director Leonard Matsa.

Gideon Jeph Wabvuta added, “Opening our 2026 season with this staged reading sets a strong foundation for excellence, professionalism, and authentic artistic expression, nurturing both new talent and seasoned Almasi alumni.”

Hansberry’s play, the first by a Black female playwright on Broadway, explores a Black family on Chicago’s south side confronting racism, housing discrimination, and the pursuit of dreams while awaiting an insurance payout. Inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem Harlem, it remains one of the most celebrated plays in theatre history.
