Nephew Accused of Swindling Uncle Out of US$59k

A 27-year-old man from Chitungwiza, Takudzwa Mbedzi, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of theft of trust property.

The complainants, Roy Kagoro and Energy Kufandiriri, are car dealers who allegedly entrusted Mbedzi, their nephew, with funds to import vehicles from Japan.

According to the State, Mbedzi, who also works as a Beforward agent, received US$47 460 from Kagoro between June 2 and November 1, 2025. The money was intended for the purchase of seven vehicles — three Nissan NV350s, two Honda Shuttles and two Toyota Townace units.

Prosecutors allege that Mbedzi failed to procure the vehicles and instead used the funds for personal purposes.

In a separate incident, Mbedzi allegedly received a further US$11 940 from Kufandiriri in October 2025 for the purchase of a Nissan NV350 and a Honda Fit. He again failed to deliver the vehicles, later admitting that he had used the money and was attempting to reimburse the complainants.

The total amount involved is US$59 400, with no recoveries made to date.

The matter was reported to the police after Mbedzi allegedly became evasive, leading to his arrest.
