The Engineering Council of Zimbabwe has issued a public warning against the misuse of the professional title “Engineer”, citing a growing trend of unregistered individuals presenting themselves as qualified professionals.
The council said it had become aware that some people were falsely claiming to be engineers, misleading the public and violating Zimbabwe’s engineering laws. ECZ emphasized that the title “Engineer” is legally reserved for individuals who are registered with the council and compliant with the Engineering Council Act.

The council cited the Engineering Council Act [Chapter 27:22], Part VI, Section 33(1), which states that no person other than a registered engineer may hold themselves out as an engineer or use any title, description, or letters suggesting registration. This restriction applies to advertisements, official documents, and any public representation.
ECZ further warned that anyone who violates this law, or knowingly engages services from someone falsely claiming to be an engineer, commits an offence. Under Section 33(3) of the Act, offenders may face a fine of up to level eight, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.
The warning follows a viral social media video in which Laston Machengo of Roy Evo Solar Tech allegedly identified himself as an engineer without being registered.
ECZ stated that this constituted a breach of the law and confirmed that it is preparing formal charges against the individual in line with statutory provisions governing engineering practice in Zimbabwe.
