
A 47-year-old Mt Darwin man has been sentenced to an effective six months in prison for assaulting his 91-year-old father, in what the court described as a serious breach of family trust and respect for the elderly.
The man, whose identity has been withheld to protect the victim, appeared before the Mt Darwin Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to physical abuse.

The court heard that on October 7, 2025, an argument broke out at the family’s farm after the elderly father asked his son to perform household chores. The son became aggressive and assaulted him using fists and open hands.
Neighbours later intervened and assisted the injured nonagenarian before reporting the matter to police.
In sentencing, the magistrate noted that violence against vulnerable family members cannot be excused under any circumstance.
