Zimbabwe Achieves Record-Breaking Wheat Harvest

Zimbabwe is on track to register another record wheat harvest in 2025, strengthening its position as one of Africa’s leading producers and exporters of the staple grain.

Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Anxious Jongwe Masuka said the country’s continued growth in wheat production reflects the collective effort of farmers, government, and private partners.

He said, “From a modest volume of 94,685 metric tonnes in 2019 to more than 562,091 metric tonnes in 2024, Zimbabwe has shown that agricultural transformation is possible when we all work together. This progress highlights the power of local farmers and the country’s ability to achieve food security.”

Dr. Masuka added that current production levels already surpass previous records.

“So far, 588,470 metric tonnes have been harvested from 113,077 hectares, with an additional 9,489 hectares expected to be harvested by early November,” he stated.

The minister noted that this year’s production marks a 511 percent increase from 2019 and exceeds the country’s annual requirement of 360,000 metric tonnes.

“We are now preparing to export surplus wheat to regional and international markets,” he said.

Farmers have attributed the record yields to improved irrigation, timely input support, and coordinated planning under government agricultural programs.

Masuka applauded farmers for their dedication, stating “This milestone belongs to every hardworking farmer and every extension worker who made it possible. Zimbabwe’s agricultural resilience continues to inspire the continent.”

In 2024, Zimbabwe achieved a record wheat output of 562,091 metric tonnes from 122,566 hectares, making it one of only two African countries to attain wheat self-sufficiency.
