Ministry spokesperson Walters Kamaya said in a statement on Sunday that the patient, who has a history of cross-border travel within the Southern African Development Community region, is receiving treatment in isolation at the Swakopmund District Hospital and remains in stable condition.
“In line with World Health Organisation protocols, one confirmed case of mpox constitutes an outbreak,” Kamaya said.
Mpox — formerly known as monkeypox — is a contagious zoonotic disease caused by an orthopoxvirus. It spreads primarily through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated materials.
Health authorities have activated surveillance and response measures to prevent further transmission and urged the public to remain alert and report any suspected symptoms.
