Zimbabwe Dominate Uganda to Open Africa Qualifier With Five-Wicket Win

Zimbabwe got off to a flying start in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier campaign, running down Uganda’s 152 for 9 with 15 deliveries to spare. The home side prevailed by five wickets thanks to a dazzling 72 from Brian Bennett (44 balls, nine fours, three sixes).

Uganda, having won the toss and batted first, posed early trouble with brisk knocks from Sumeet Verma (45 off 32) and Raghav Dhawan (29 off 19).  Their 100 came up in the 12th over, but a sagging finish saw them add just 52 in the last eight overs, finishing at 152/9.  Zimbabwe’s bowling was restored by three wickets apiece from Brad Evans (3/19) and Blessing Muzarabani (3/20), while Richard Ngarava chipped in with two.

In reply, Bennett made a mockery of the chase from the first over, hammering 15 off Juma Miyaji. Zimbabwe raced to 46/1 by over 4, and Bennett reached fifty in just 29 balls.  Brendan Taylor’s 39 anchored the middle as Zimbabwe cruised past the target with comfortable ease.

The win avenges Zimbabwe’s previous stinging loss to Uganda in the earlier Africa qualifiers, where Uganda had famously stunned Zimbabwe.
