A company administrator uncovered payment discrepancies that led to the arrest of a sales representative accused of stealing more than US$9 000 from her employer.

Tanyaradzwa Mutamiri, 31, appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai facing a charge of theft of trust property.

She was remanded in custody.

The complainant is William Scott and Company (Private) Limited.

Mutamiri had been employed as a sales representative since January 2024. Her duties included selling goods to clients, creating invoices, preparing quotations, receiving payments, issuing receipts, and remitting payments to the accounts office.

The company offered both cash and credit facilities, and Mutamiri was responsible for collecting credit payments from clients and remitting them to the accounts office.

Prosecutor Nomsa Kangara told the court that between January and July 2025, Mutamiri collected money from clients who had purchased goods on credit but failed to remit the payments, instead converting them to her personal use.

On August 14, the company administrator followed up on outstanding payments from clients and discovered that Mutamiri had received the money but not forwarded it to the company.

A reconciliation showed that US$9,260 was missing.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to her arrest. The company suffered a financial prejudice of US$9,260, and none of the funds were recovered.
