A 19-year-old man is in custody after allegedly attempting to sell a dead infant as beef in Harare's CBD.

Stanley Marecha was ordered by magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai at the Harare Magistrate's Courts to undergo a psychiatric assessment by two doctors.

Marecha, who went viral and shocked social media users last week, is accused of violating a corpse.

He was remanded in custody until July 18, 2025.

The prosecution through prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu told the court that the incident occurred on July 4 at around 12:30 am, at the Corner of Rezende and Speke Avenue in Harare.

Marecha approached an informant while carrying a large black plastic bag filled with empty bottles.

He then offered to sell what he claimed was beef meat.

When the informant asked to inspect the meat, Marecha pulled out a smaller plastic bag from the larger one.

Upon opening the package, the informant was allegedly shocked to discover that the supposed 'beef' was, in fact, the body of a dead infant.

The matter was immediately reported to the police.

Authorities confirmed that Marecha was in possession of the dead infant, and the body has since been taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital Mortuary for proper handling as investigations continue.

Police noted that there are two witnesses in the case, and further inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the infant's death and Marecha's actions.
