A woman and her brother have been acquitted of attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking her boyfriend with an empty beer bottle and a machete.

Mary Nyangani ,20, and Kelvin Mdawo 41, both of Mbare, appeared before magistrate Letwin Rwodzi facing attempted murder charges. They were acquitted due to the case relying on a single witness—the complainant—who was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.

The complainant, Percy Ngwerume ,33, is said to be in a relationship with Nyangani. Mdawo is Nyangani’s brother.

According to the State, represented by prosecutor Loveti Muringwa, the incident occurred on January 10 at around 10:30 PM. A misunderstanding arose after Nyangani allegedly took Ngwerume’s phone and refused to return it.

The court heard that Nyangani struck Ngwerume on the left hand with an empty beer bottle and then used an unidentified object to hit him on the head.

Mdawo reportedly emerged from his room upon hearing the commotion and allegedly struck Ngwerume on the head with a machete.

Ngwerume sustained a deep cut on his right ear and another on his left hand.
