Castle Tankard Gallops Back

Zim Now Writer

Zimbabwe’s most prestigious horse racing event, the Castle Tankard, is set to make its much-anticipated return for the 65th edition on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the iconic Borrowdale Racecourse.

Hosted by Delta Beverages in collaboration with the Mashonaland Turf Club, the event continues its legacy as Africa’s longest-running sponsored horse race and remains the only Grade One race in Zimbabwe.

With a lucrative purse of USD $50,000, this year’s race is expected to attract elite jockeys, seasoned trainers, and thoroughbreds from across the region, setting the stage for a day of high-stakes competition and equestrian excellence.

But the Castle Tankard is more than just a horse race—it has become a vibrant national celebration and a staple of Zimbabwe’s social scene. From 10 AM to 7:30 PM, guests will be treated to a full festival experience: think sizzling braais, cold Castle Lager, and nonstop entertainment in a carnival-like setting.

The musical lineup promises to be as thrilling as the race itself. Sungura legend Alick Macheso leads the charge, joined by Zimdancehall heavyweights Enzo Ishall, Delroy Shewe, Nisha T, and the fan-favourite Chillspot Family.

Adding a fresh twist to this year’s show is rising star Oriyano, who will make his Castle Tankard debut—an exciting milestone as he steps onto one of Zimbabwe’s biggest stages for the first time.

Delta Beverages Marketing Director Irimayi Muzorewa described the event as a celebration of “unity, excitement, and world-class racing,” inviting all fans to “Come Together with a Castle.”
