The man who lost US$3,800 to ex Chitungwiza Ward 12 ex-councilor Darlington Musonza says he did not expect a sitting councilor to be a criminal and therefore he did not exercise due diligence in his drive to buy a residential stand.
“These councilors are thieves, there are other five people who were also deceived by Musonza. These people are the ones tarnishing the council’s image by selling land at the expense of the council,” Kudakwashe Chatima told Zim Now.
Musonza was recently convicted of conning Chatima of US$3800 and sentenced to 250 hours of community service by Harare magistrate Feris Chakanyuka
Musonza sold Chatima a non-existent stand in Zengeza 3 Extension. The crime occurred in 2017.
Musonza first appeared in court over the same matter in August 2020.
There have been other cases of councilors being involved in unsavoury land deals.
Former Chitungwiza mayor Phillip Mutoti was in 2018 suspended after being convicted of fraud and abuse of office. Mutoti bought a residential stand using his three-year-old son’s name.
The son was listed as self-employed and a lodger at Number 343 St Mary’s in Chitungwiza in application forms filed at the local authority.
Musonza could not be reached for comment as his phone was not reachable.
