A 26-year-old member of the CIO, George Goromondo appeared in court on Thursday, accused of raping a woman who had sought spiritual assistance at his shrine.

Goromondo was released on US$200 bail and will return to court on July 8 for a possible trial date allocation.

It is alleged that the complainant visited Goromondo's shrine in Dzivaresekwa, Harare, last month seeking spiritual deliverance.

Goromondo allegedly prepared an anointing syrup and applied it to the complainant before offering to escort her home.

Along the way, he demanded sex and, after the complainant refused, produced his CIO identity card and raped her. He then threatened her not to reveal the incident to anyone.

The matter came to light when the complainant reported the incident to her grandmother, who accompanied her to the police station, leading to Goromondo's arrest.

The State was represented by Lancelot Mutsokoti.
