Two Botswana men and a Zimbabwean have appeared before a Hwange magistrate on charges of possessing a dangerous explosive after police being found with a 81mm mortar bomb.
The case against Moloi Ishmael and Baleseng Tshauwe from Botswana and their Zimbabwean counterpart Newman Sikula who is a legal resident of Botswana, is that on 3 August while travelling in Sikula’s vehicle, they were stopped by the police at the 69 kilometre peg along Victoria Falls-Kazungula road.
Police found a 81mm mortar bomb containing red mercury worth US$6 250, a 9mm Rossi Revolver and four 9mm live rounds in the vehicle. The three had no license for the explosive or the gun.
According to Wikipedia mortar bombs are shells fired at high speed into the air to fall upon their targets during battles. The mortar is an artillery weapon that can be carried by one human and is fired at close range.
The state further alleges that the three had entered Zimbabwe illegally on the same day and were intending to use the same route through the bush in the Kazungula area.
The three men said they had bought the mortar bomb from Zimbabwean Nigel Mwilinde as a source of red mercury for unstated use.
It was not clear from the court proceedings if Mwilinde has been apprehended.
Zimbabwe recently offered amnesty for holders of illegal arms to surrender their weapons but less than 100 of the estimated 250 000 were given up.
