Rainy season not yet with us: MSD

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has said we are not yet in the rainy season, despite the showers that fell across the country, including in the capital Harare on Monday.

Meteorological Department Chief Forecaster James Ngoma said farmers cannot start planting now as some areas such as Mazowe have not yet received any rain at all.

“We cannot judge all areas in the same blanket as some areas have not received rainfall at all.

“Some of the highest rainfalls were measured in some places such as Chishawasha (182mm), Chisengu (54mm), Marondera Rail (31mm), Masvingo (31mm), Makoholi (72mm) and Kutsaga (13mm).

A weather report and forecast issued by the MSD said isolated thunderstorms are expected in Matabeleland North and South and Masvingo provinces.

The department also spoke about the current heat, urging the public to keep hydrated and avoid prolonged periods in direct sunlight when the sun is at its peak.

Most parts of the country have been experiencing very high temperatures before and after the Monday showers.

“The public is urged to avoid starting outdoor fires and safeguard against their spread by constructing fireguards that are maintained free from combustible matter,” the MSD said.
