Zimbabwean author and data analyst Sukoluhle Nyathi won her first literary award after being judged as the Best Fiction Novel winner at the 2023 Humanities and Social Sciences Creative Collection and Digital Contribution Awards held in Pretoria, South Africa.

She earned the honour for her fourth novel An Angel's Demise.

The awards celebrate intellectual-creative workers whose work often goes unnoticed both in the academy and society at large and these include authors and playwrights, poets, artists, curators and publishers.

Nyathi said she felt honoured to be recognised for her passion.

“It feels fantastic. I have made long lists and shortlists so now it’s great, so I finally won a prizeAll my novels are special and precious to me.

“My passion for writing fuels me. This is why I describe myself as a writer by passion and an analyst by profession. I love writing, if I didn’t, I would never have got entangled in this craft.

“I urge aspiring writers to be consistent. Passion, perseverance and persistence pays. That is what will carry you through," she said.

Nyathi was last year selected to be part of the five finalists of the African Union Writers Residency Programme 2022.

Other finalists included Egyptian poet and editor Nour Kamel, Kenyan fiction writer Tony Mochama, Nigerian award-winning novelist TJ Benson and Cameroonian award-winning writer Musih Tedji Xaviere.

The novelist first published The Polygamist in 2012, which was followed by The Gold Diggers (2018), A Family Affair (2020) and then An Angel's Demise (2022).
