Beitbridge Municipality taken charge of a water reticulation system and an 11.4 mega litre reservoir that was constructed by Zimborders Consortium as part of the US$300 million Beitbridge Border Post modernisation project.
The official handover was done on Friday where Local Government and Public Works Minister, July Moyo, received it Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister, Felix Mhona, whose ministry was responsible for the border upgrade.
Moyo, Mhona, Beitbridge Town Clerk Loud Ramakgapola, Mayor Munyaradzi Chitsunge among other dignitaries attended the handover ceremony.
The consortium also did out-of-port-works, which include an animal plant, quarantine facility, 220 housing units for border employees, a new fire station and a new sewer oxidation dam.
Beitbridge Municipality will be responsible for administration of the water reservoir through treatment, reticulating, metering and revenue collection.

Minister Moyo urged the municipality to have a proper water accounting system, adding that there were plans to sell the water across the border.
“While we are giving you the authority of the water supply system, we want you to have proper accounting of the water. We are also looking into supplying the country and beyond in the future,” said Moyo.
Chitsunge said the additional water distribution facility will be adequate to meet Beitbridge’s water demand.
“Our water supply is going to increase, and the additional water distribution facility will also help us meet residents’ water demand. We also urge residents and government departments to pay up their water bills arrears,” said Chitsunge.
This comes as the Zimbabwe National Water Authority recently handed over another water treatment plant to the municipality after a long standoff resulting from debts.
His often led to residents going for weeks without tap water.
