Blanket Mine on Verge of Making History as Gwanda’s Third PSL Club

Blanket Mine FC are on the verge of securing a historic Premier Soccer League (PSL) promotion that could make them the third team associated with Gwanda to reach Zimbabwe’s top-flight football league.

The Gwanda-based side moved within three points of promotion after cruising to a 3-0 victory over ZRP Gwanda at Sabiwa Stadium on Wednesday, extending their remarkable unbeaten run to 31 matches in the ZIFA Central Region Division One League, with just three games remaining.

Coach Luke Petros and his charges now turn their attention to this weekend’s crucial encounter against Shurugwi FC at Makusha Stadium, where they could take a decisive step towards fulfilling their PSL ambitions.

Beyond their impressive results, however, Blanket Mine’s promotion push carries added significance for Gwanda, a town with a rich football history and previous connections to the country’s top-flight league.

Should they secure promotion, Blanket Mine FC would join Railstars FC and Njube Sundowns among the teams linked to Gwanda that have featured in the PSL, potentially marking another important milestone for football in the mining town.

However, the history of Railstars FC remains a subject of uncertainty, with some league records associating the club with Gwanda while others identify it as a Bulawayo side. These conflicting accounts make it difficult to establish conclusively whether the club originated in Gwanda or was merely associated with the town during part of its history.

Njube Sundowns, meanwhile, brought top-flight football closer to Gwanda when the Bulawayo-associated club relocated to the town during the 2005 season. The move saw Phelandaba Stadium become associated with the club’s home matches, although Sundowns endured a difficult campaign.

Blanket Mine FC now have an opportunity to build on that history and establish their own identity in Zimbabwean football.

Unlike the previous examples, their promotion campaign has been built on performances in the Central Region Division One League, with their sustained consistency putting them firmly in contention for a place among the country’s elite.
