Highfield man gets 10 years for TelOne cable theft

A 35-year-old Highfield man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was caught carrying 500 metres of stolen TelOne cables along Boyd Road in Southerton.

Fungai Craig Mangwiro, 35, of Highfield, was convicted of stealing TelOne drop wires when he appeared before the Mbare Magistrates’ Court.

He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Prosecutor Allen Chifokoyo told the court that on September 24, 2026, at around 6.30pm, a community security guard who was patrolling along Boyd Road in Southerton spotted Mangwiro carrying a white sack.

The court heard that the guard became suspicious and alerted mourners who were gathered at a nearby funeral.

The group apprehended Mangwiro and searched the sack, recovering 500 metres of TelOne drop wires.

Mangwiro was taken, together with the recovered cables, to Southerton Police Station, where he was formally charged.

A TelOne official was called to identify the property and positively identified the cables as belonging to TelOne Zimbabwe. The cables were valued at US$500.

The cables were produced in court as an exhibit.

The State proved that Mangwiro had no lawful right to possess the TelOne property and that the theft disrupted communication services in the area.
