ZHRC Commissioner Dies After Alleged Axe Attack by Wife

 

Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) Commissioner Martin Muduva has died after allegedly being attacked with an axe by his wife at their Dzivarasekwa Extension home on Tuesday night.

Muduva died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.

Sources familiar with the case said Muduva was allegedly struck twice with an axe during what is believed to have been a domestic dispute. His wife was also taken to hospital but later died after reportedly consuming poison, in an incident being investigated as a suspected suicide.

Police have launched investigations into the deaths, although the events leading to the alleged attack remain unclear.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the ZHRC, which described Muduva’s death, together with that of his wife, as a major loss to the institution.

Muduva joined the Commission as a commissioner on December 19, 2024. During his tenure, the ZHRC said he contributed significantly to its work, particularly on the intersection of human rights and technology.

The Commission praised his dedication to public service and the protection and promotion of human rights and administrative justice.

It expressed its condolences to the couple’s children, relatives, friends and other loved ones, saying it would continue to support the bereaved families during the difficult period.
