China Invites Zimbabweans to Tell Its Friendship Story

Zimbabwean content creators and storytellers have until October 10 to put China-Zimbabwe relations through their own lenses in a short video competition launched by the Chinese Embassy in Harare.

The contest, themed Our Friendship, Our Bond: China-Zimbabwe Ties Through My Eyes," is inviting Zimbabweans to tell authentic stories about the relationship between the two countries as part of activities marking the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

For some, the story may be about studying in China. For others, it could be a personal encounter, a community project, business cooperation or the everyday interactions that have connected people from Zimbabwe and China over the years.

The Embassy wants those stories captured through vlogs, short documentaries, micro-films and interview clips.

Entries should preferably run for between one and three minutes, although videos of up to five minutes will be accepted. They must be original, previously unpublished, submitted in MP4 format and have a minimum resolution of 720p.

The competition is open to Zimbabwean nationals, who can enter individually or in teams of up to three people, at no cost.

Participants must submit their videos, together with a 150-word introduction, their full names, affiliation or school, and WhatsApp numbers, to cn.zw.friendship@hotmail.com.

The email subject should read: Short Video Contest – Name – WhatsApp Number.

Late submissions will not be reviewed.

An award ceremony will be held before the end of the year, with the Chinese Embassy saying the exact date will be announced separately.

The competition continues a growing tradition of using creative work to tell the story of relations between China and Zimbabwe.

Last year, Zimbabweans were invited to participate in an essay competition marking 45 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The competition, themed 45 Years On: My Views on China-Zimbabwe Friendship,” gave writers an opportunity to reflect on the history and future of the relationship.

Zimbabwean creatives have also featured on wider China-Africa storytelling platforms.

In the 2021 China-Africa Video and Photo Competition, Zimbabwean Michael Mubaiwa won a Special Prize in the video category for Love for Guqin, showing how Zimbabwean storytellers have previously found audiences through creative exchanges linking China and Africa.

The latest competition again places the camera in the hands of Zimbabweans.

Whether the story is about friendship, culture, education, development or a personal experience, the Embassy is asking creators to tell it through their own eyes.

For the winners, the story may begin with just a smartphone camera and a few minutes of video.
