Mozambican Man Jailed Two Years for Possessing Dagga

A 27-year-old Mozambican man was sentenced to an effective two years in prison by the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court this week after he was convicted of unlawfully possessing 2.7kg of dagga.

Talkmore Sigauke appeared before the court facing a charge of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.

He was sentenced to three years in prison, with one year suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence, leaving him to serve an effective two years behind bars.

The court heard that Sigauke was arrested on August 6, 2026, during a routine police operation along the Ngundu-Tanganda Road in Chipinge.

Police officers manning a roadblock at the 210-kilometre peg intercepted a sky-blue Honda Fit travelling towards Tanganda.

During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly found 2.7kg of dagga concealed in a white plastic bag.

The package was reportedly stuffed inside a maroon satchel.

The driver told the officers that the satchel belonged to Sigauke, who resides at Bakonye Village under Chief Musirizwi in Mozambique.

The recovered dagga was later taken to the Grain Marketing Board depot at Chipangayi, where it was weighed.

The weight certificate was tendered in court as an exhibit during the trial.

In passing sentence, the magistrate imposed three years’ imprisonment, with one year suspended for five years on condition that Sigauke does not commit a similar offence.

He will therefore serve an effective two years in prison.
