Car Dealer Accused of Taking US$31k for Truck That Never Arrived

A 30-year-old Glen View car dealer has appeared in court accused of misappropriating US$31,000 paid by a customer to import a Mercedes-Benz truck from the United Kingdom.

Chipo Chigonero appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court facing a charge of theft of trust property. She was remanded to July 14.

According to the State, Chigonero was engaged by Tinashe Doyce to source and import a Mercedes-Benz truck.

Prosecutors allege that on March 9, 2026, Doyce paid Chigonero US$25,000 at her business premises in Mandara to facilitate the purchase and importation of the vehicle. She allegedly promised to deliver the truck within seven days.

The State further alleges that on April 15, 2026, Chigonero requested an additional US$6,000, which Doyce paid after she again undertook to deliver the truck within a week.

Instead, prosecutors say Chigonero failed to import or deliver the vehicle and allegedly converted the US$31,000 to her own use.

The matter was reported to the police after Chigonero allegedly became evasive when Doyce demanded either the truck or a refund.

No money has been recovered, the court heard.
