Chitungwiza, Highfield Rivalry Reignites in Age Group NPL Finals

Chitungwiza and Highfield’s long standing cricket rivalry will take centre stage this weekend when Gladiators and Takashinga 2 clash in both the Under-13 boys and Under-15 girls finals of the Zimbabwe Cricket Age Group National Premier League at Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare.

Both finals are scheduled for Sunday morning, with play beginning at 9.15am after the two sides emerged as the dominant teams during the group stages of the competition.

The double showdown adds another chapter to a rivalry that has played an important role in Zimbabwean cricket over the years. Chitungwiza and Highfield have produced numerous players and clubs that have contributed significantly to the domestic game, and the latest encounters highlight the continued growth of talent from the two communities.

In the Under-13 boys competition, Gladiators topped Zone One with an unbeaten record, winning all three of their matches. They secured their place in the final with an impressive eight-wicket victory over Alex Sports Club. Takashinga 2 were equally dominant in Zone Two, maintaining a perfect record and confirming top spot with a five-wicket win over Queens Sports Club.

The same teams will contest the Under-15 girls title after enjoying flawless campaigns in their respective groups. Gladiators finished at the summit of Zone One and capped off their group matches with a commanding 177-run triumph over Alex Sports Club. Takashinga 2 also remained unbeaten in Zone Two, underlining their championship credentials with a comprehensive 10-wicket victory against Queens Sports Club.

Several players have stood out during the tournament. Takashinga 2’s Kyle Batidzirai leads the Under-13 boys batting charts with 147 runs, while Rangers’ Mufudzi Ngirande has accumulated 130 and Amakhosi’s Craig Phiri has scored 123 runs. Gladiators’ Tinashe Juma heads the bowling rankings with 11 wickets, with Takashinga 2’s Ethan Mufukwa close behind on nine.

In the Under-15 girls section, Gladiators’ Nenyasha Chirume has been the leading batter with 164 runs, ahead of Anesu Chawasarira and Ruvarashe Maimba. Sandra Chigaramasimbe has dominated with the ball for Gladiators, claiming 13 wickets, while Takashinga 2’s Jessy Mutungwindu has taken eight wickets.
