Gorimbo Ends MMA Career After 16 Years

Temba Gorimbo has officially announced his retirement from professional mixed martial arts, bringing to an end a 16-year journey that saw him rise from humble beginnings to compete on the global UFC stage.

The 35-year-old fighter said the decision came after deep reflection following his most recent fight, admitting that he felt “some sort of relief” after finally closing the chapter on his fighting career. Gorimbo revealed that during fight week he made a deliberate effort to enjoy every moment because he sensed it could be his last appearance inside the cage.

During his fighting career, Gorimbo made history by becoming the former EFC Welterweight Champion and one of Zimbabwe’s most recognised MMA athletes to compete internationally. He won the vacant EFC welterweight title after defeating Luke Michael and successfully defended the belt once before moving to the UFC.

Gorimbo thanked UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby for giving him the opportunity to fulfill one of his biggest dreams by competing in the UFC. While acknowledging that he fell short of becoming a UFC champion, he said he had accepted the outcome and was at peace with his career.

“I did not give up but the chapter ended and I will control my story narrative forever,” Gorimbo wrote.

The Zimbabwean fighter also expressed gratitude to his coaches, teammates, managers and fans who supported him throughout his career. He gave special thanks to Dwayne Johnson and his team for helping him build a life in America, while also appreciating his family for standing by him during the highs and lows of the sport.

Despite retiring as an athlete, Gorimbo said he still plans to remain involved in mixed martial arts as a coach and manager. He added that he now wants to focus more on tennis and supporting his daughters’ sporting ambitions.

The announcement drew strong reactions from fans and supporters across Zimbabwe. Combat sports fan Caesar Zvai praised Gorimbo for prioritising his health and knowing when to walk away from the sport. He also encouraged the former fighter to continue representing Zimbabwe positively despite political differences.

“Governments are transient but Zimbabwe is forever,” Zvai commented.

Another supporter, Jacob Mutisi, described Gorimbo as a source of inspiration for many young Zimbabweans who dream of succeeding on the international stage.

“Walking away to protect your health is not weakness, it is wisdom and strength,” Mutisi wrote. “Once a warrior, always a warrior.”
