Grain Tigers bounced back emphatically from their narrow defeat to Blanket Mine, thrashing Vhembe Stars Academy 4–1 in an entertaining encounter that showcased the side’s attacking strength and resilience.
Coming into the match under pressure following a disappointing 1–0 loss, Tigers responded like a team determined to restore confidence and momentum. Coach Kudzai Mhandire had promised a strong reaction from his players — and they delivered.
The hosts wasted no time asserting dominance, opening the scoring just five minutes after kickoff. The early goal unsettled Vhembe Stars, and Tigers doubled their advantage in the 14th minute after capitalising on a costly defensive error.
Despite trailing 2–0 inside the opening quarter-hour, the Beitbridge-based academy side refused to surrender. Vhembe Stars grew into the game, creating several dangerous attacking moments before pulling one back in the 30th minute to keep the contest alive heading into halftime.
Tigers, however, returned from the break with renewed intensity. Controlling possession and dictating the tempo, the hosts added two more goals in the second half to seal a convincing victory.
Speaking after the match, Mhandire praised his players’ response following the previous defeat, while acknowledging areas that still require improvement.

“We are happy with the scoring, but as a coach, even when we are winning, we must identify areas to improve, especially the goal we conceded. It wasn’t necessary,” said Mhandire.
He added that the performance reflected the mentality he wants from his squad.
“It shows character. We always emphasise character and how quickly you rise after a setback.”
Vhembe Stars Academy coach Blessing Madombi remained optimistic despite the heavy loss, saying his young side continues to make progress.
“As far as the play is concerned, we are moving in the right direction, but it is heartbreaking to lose by such a margin,” said Madombi.
“Of course, there are areas we need to work on, but overall we played well.”
The victory revives Grain Tigers’ campaign as they continue pushing for a top-three finish, with the team currently sitting fourth on the league table.
