A Chinhoyi supermarket employee has been convicted after unlawfully taking more than US$7 000 from her employer’s EcoCash kiosk by failing to properly record transactions and account for cash under her control.
Sibongile Chitala (29) was found guilty by the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court following the disappearance of US$7 067 at TM South supermarket.

The court heard that on November 26, 2025, Chitala was responsible for handling cash transactions at the EcoCash kiosk but failed to account for all funds received during the course of her duties.
The offence was uncovered the following morning when the branch manager detected a significant cash shortfall during routine checks and notified the branch administrator.
A reconciliation of cash-in and cash-out transactions showed that Chitala had submitted only US$4 496 despite records indicating she should have been holding US$11 563.
Investigations revealed that several transactions had not been entered into the EcoCash record book in an apparent attempt to conceal the missing funds. The matter was subsequently reported to police, leading to her arrest.
The court ordered that she repay the full US$7 067 to the complainant by July 30, 2026, as part of the sentencing conditions.
