West Nicholson FC head coach Ophani Muleya says his team has demonstrated resilience after recovering from a disappointing derby defeat to remain firmly in contention in the Central Region Soccer League title race.
West Nicholson suffered a 2–0 loss to town rivals Gwanda Pirates in last weekend’s heated Gwanda Derby but responded strongly with a convincing 2–0 victory over Sabi Mine in their following fixture.
The win saw West Nicholson move above Gwanda Pirates on the league standings as the side continues preparing for tougher tests ahead, including a crucial encounter against title challengers Blanket Mine FC.
Blanket Mine have enjoyed an impressive start to the season, winning five matches and drawing once against log leaders Chapungu FC to sit second on the table.

Reflecting on the derby defeat, Muleya said such matches are often unpredictable due to heightened emotions among players and supporters.
“It’s very difficult to predict a derby because it is normally played between the players and the fans,” he said.
The coach acknowledged that early defensive lapses proved costly against Gwanda Pirates but commended his players for quickly correcting their mistakes in the next match.
“We conceded early goals but I have told my boys not to repeat such mistakes and respond to what I have asked them. Their response led us to win against Sabi,” Muleya said.
As competition intensifies in the league, Muleya also highlighted the importance of improving player welfare, stressing that financial stability plays a key role in maintaining performance levels.
“The boys will be focused on the field and do their work well, so there is need for them to be paid because they also have lives to live outside football,” he said.
