Hauna District Hospital has marked a significant milestone in healthcare delivery following a transition from manual film to digital X-ray technology, effectively doubling its patient handling capacity. The upgrade, part of a nationwide modernisation drive by the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), has seen daily patient figures jump from 10 to over 20, virtually eliminating the long wait times that previously plagued the facility. The Ministry confirmed in a statement that by switching from manual film to digital technology, the hospital has successfully expanded its reach and streamlined diagnostic workflows.
For residents of Mutasa District, the shift is proving life-changing as the previous manual system often resulted in diagnostic bottlenecks that forced patients to wait days for results or travel long distances to referral centres. The new digital system allows for one-visit results, which facilitates immediate clinical intervention and faster treatment paths for those in urgent need.

The modernisation of Hauna District Hospital is not an isolated event but a critical component of a broader strategy to decentralise specialist-level care across the country. This initiative has been bolstered by the support of international partners, specifically the Global Fund and UNDP Zimbabwe, working in close collaboration with the MoHCC. Ministry officials noted that this partnership is instrumental in bringing high-level diagnostic services to all districts in Zimbabwe, ensuring that rural populations are not left behind in the digital health transition.
