Qualifier Setback Forces Zimbabwe Cricket to Seek New Women’s Team Head Coach

Zimbabwe Cricket has intensified its search for a new head coach for the Senior Women’s national team following a disappointing campaign at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier, a setback that has triggered a shift in the technical leadership.

The Lady Chevrons’ struggles at the global stage stand in sharp contrast to their earlier dominance on the continent. Just months before, Zimbabwe had been in imperious form, sweeping through the Africa Qualifier unbeaten and clinching the title with commanding performances, including a convincing nine-wicket victory over Namibia in the final.

That regional success underlined Zimbabwe’s growing strength, with disciplined bowling displays and consistent batting performances seeing them qualify comfortably for the global tournament.

However, the transition to the Global Qualifier proved far more challenging. The team struggled to replicate the same level of dominance against stronger international opposition, with inconsistencies in both batting and finishing games exposing gaps that ultimately contributed to their underwhelming campaign. Even in preparation matches, Zimbabwe showed signs of vulnerability, including a defeat to Papua New Guinea where they fell short chasing 132 runs.

This contrast  from continental dominance to global disappointment,  has been a key factor behind the decision to part ways with former coach Walter Chawaguta, as the board seeks a reset ahead of tougher international assignments.

“Zimbabwe Cricket is seeking a high-calibre Head Coach to lead the Zimbabwe Women’s National Team during a historic phase, as we embark on our inaugural campaign in the ICC Women’s Championship,” the organisation said in a statement.

In the immediate aftermath of Chawaguta’s departure, Kate Ebrahim was appointed interim head coach and oversaw the team during their tour of New Zealand, an assignment that has since been completed.

While Zimbabwe’s record shows consistent success at regional level  including multiple Africa Qualifier titles and an unbeaten run in recent editions , their difficulties in translating that form onto the global stage remain evident.

The search for a new head coach is therefore not just about replacing personnel, but about bridging that gap.
