Zimbabwean telecommunications and technology entrepreneur Strive Masiyiwa is accelerating Africa’s digital finance push after Cassava Technologies entered a strategic partnership with Circle Internet Group Inc. to expand the use of the US dollar-backed stablecoin USDC across the continent.
The collaboration marks Circle’s first operational expansion into Africa and will see USDC integrated into Sasai Fintech Ltd., Cassava’s digital payments subsidiary. The move is expected to enable faster and more affordable cross-border payments while widening access to digital financial services.
Sasai already operates in more than 30 African markets, positioning the partnership to reach millions of individuals and businesses that rely on mobile platforms for everyday transactions.

By embedding USDC into the ecosystem, users will be able to send and receive funds across borders with reduced transaction friction and improved settlement speed.
Masiyiwa described the initiative as a step toward unlocking new economic possibilities, pointing to Africa’s rapidly expanding mobile connectivity and increasingly tech-literate population.
He said digital currencies and modern payment infrastructure could support entrepreneurs, improve trade efficiency, and strengthen financial participation across underserved communities.
Stablecoins such as USDC are increasingly gaining popularity across Africa, particularly in economies experiencing currency instability or limited access to traditional banking services.
