The innovative waste management model pioneered by Geo Pomona Waste Management continues to cast a spell over local authorities across Zimbabwe, with Bindura Municipality and the City of Kwekwe becoming the latest to move toward formalizing strategic partnerships to overhaul their waste systems.
As the country pushes toward Vision 2030, the transformation of the former Pomona dumpsite into a world-class integrated waste management facility has become a blueprint for municipalities struggling with environmental degradation and archaic disposal methods.
Bindura Municipality is exploring possible collaboration with Geo Pomona Waste Management as it works towards attaining city status, Town Clerk Evelyn Madziire has said. Speaking to the media after being led on a tour of the waste management firm’s facility in Harare yesterday, Madziire expressed deep admiration for the site's evolution.
“We are a municipality, we are also aiming for city status, that’s why we are coming here, so that we emulate the best,” she said.
Madziire noted that while the municipality had previously visited the site for national events and vehicle commissioning, a dedicated study tour was necessary to understand the technical depth of the operations.
“When we got back home, we thought it was necessary to come back for a special visit and really tour the area, so that in future we can also come up with some strategic partnership with Geo Pomona.”
With 21 hectares of land currently used as a managed dump site, Bindura hopes to leverage Geo Pomona's expertise to transition toward a modern landfill system. Ms. Madziire also hinted at a regional approach to make the partnership more viable.

“Considering the size of our city, maybe we will also invite some of our sister local authorities who are near us, so that it makes economic sense that maybe Geo Pomona could be able to partner with us, because what we see here is a massive project, a landmark project, which we never dreamed of, but here it is in our country, Zimbabwe.
“So we also want to emulate that because when we were touring, we could see that this is sustainable development, the environment is managed well, from water bodies to underground features, so our purpose of coming here was just to see for ourselves.”
While Bindura is in the exploratory phase, the City of Kwekwe is on the verge of sealing a deal. Geo Pomona’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman, Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, confirmed that negotiations with the Midlands-based authority are nearing completion.
“With Kwekwe, we started negotiating, we are finalising our bid, our contract. I think by the end of this month, we will finish our negotiations with the City of Kwekwe,” Nguwaya said.
He added that several other local authorities are in various stages of deliberation, emphasizing that the firm is “ready to partner with them” to replicate the Harare success story nationwide.
The "Geo Pomona charm" extends beyond industrial waste processing. The facility is increasingly becoming a lifestyle hub, featuring FIFA-certified sports fields and recreational amenities. Dr. Nguwaya revealed that the site’s state-of-the-art restaurant is nearing completion.
“The restaurant is now ready, very soon you will see people come here. I think in March we will start operating the restaurant. I hope you come here and enjoy,” he said
