President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa officially commissioned the second batch of high-tech refuse collection equipment at the Geo Pomona Waste Management site today.
The commissioning marks a critical turning point for Harare, which has long struggled with waste collection bottlenecks. The new fleet, managed by Geo Pomona Waste Management Pvt Ltd, represents a modern, industrial approach to urban sanitation, transitioning the city from a traditional "dumping" mindset to a "circular economy" model.
Addressing stakeholders at the Pomona site, President Mnangagwa praised the strategic partnership between the Government, the City of Harare, and Geo Pomona. He described the collaboration as a blueprint for how private sector efficiency can meet public sector needs.
"This initiative will transform and reposition Harare as a world-class city with an efficient and reliable waste management system, in line with the expansion and growth being witnessed under the Second Republic," the President stated.
He emphasized that the project is not just about moving trash, but about environmental conservation and city beautification, which he cited as essential pillars of national wellbeing.
In a bid to foster accountability and local pride, the President announced a new national incentive program. Local authorities across Zimbabwe will now be eligible for performance awards based on their consistency in observing National Clean-Up Fridays and their active participation in conservation programs.
