
A 37-year-old man from Ziko, Seke, has appeared in the Harare Magistrates’ Court after he was allegedly caught with more than 36 kilogrammes of dagga smuggled from South Africa.
Davis Makaya appeared before magistrate Apollonia Marutya facing charges of unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs following a CID Drugs and Narcotics operation at Road Port on December 4, 2025.
According to the State, detectives acted on a tip-off indicating that a consignment of drugs was aboard a Double T Bus with South African registration plates AGJ 2260, which had just arrived from Johannesburg. When officers approached the driver, Shepherd Mupoperi, he is said to have allowed them to search the trailer.

During the search, four suspicious boxes were found among passengers’ luggage. Mupoperi reportedly identified Makaya as the person who had loaded the boxes onto the bus in Johannesburg. A search conducted in Makaya’s presence allegedly uncovered five plastic packs of compressed dagga.
Makaya was arrested on the spot and taken to CID Drugs and Narcotics Harare for further processing. The seized drugs were weighed in his presence and confirmed to be approximately 36.137 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of US$3 614. A formal seizure notice was issued to him.
He faces charges under the Dangerous Drugs Act and is expected to return to court for his bail hearing and further proceedings.
