Tagwirei Bankrolled Zanu PF’s 2013 Election Campaign

Former Zanu PF political commissar Webster Shamu  disclosed that businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei was a major financier of the ruling party’s 2013 election campaign.

Speaking during a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting in Chinhoyi recently, Shamu known for his flamboyant praise of the late former President Robert Mugabe, said Tagwirei had long been involved with the party, contrary to claims that he is a new figure in its leadership structures.

Shamu revealed that Tagwirei quietly supplied critical resources during the 2013 elections, including fuel and other logistics that helped Zanu PF secure victory.

“Many of us have known Tagwirei for a long time,” Shamu said. “For the first time, I will publicly state that he funded our 2013 campaign. He provided resources, fuel, and everything we needed. We did not announce it then because he is a humble and disciplined person.”

Zanu PF went on to win 61.88% of the presidential vote and captured 196 out of 270 parliamentary seats in that election.

Tagwirei, recently appointed to Zanu PF’s Central Committee, has become increasingly influential within the party and is widely seen as a possible successor to President Emmerson Mnangagwa either in 2028 or in 2030, should Mnangagwa succeed in extending his tenure.

His main competitor for the top position is Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is known to harbor presidential ambitions but has maintained a relatively low public profile. Tagwirei, by contrast, has been highly visible at party events and has reportedly donated over US$500,000.
