ECOZI Trains Journalists to Strengthen Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Reporting

The Education Coalition of Zimbabwe has trained journalists on gender equality and social inclusion reporting, marking a key step toward promoting sustainable development goals within the education sector.

Speaking on the sidelines of the media training, ECOZI Programmes Manager Wadzanayi Chitiga said media practitioners play a crucial role in shaping public discourse and influencing social norms, which should extend to advancing gender equality and inclusion.

“The discussion we had today was meant to ensure that media practitioners take the lead in advocating for leaving no one behind in the education sector.

"We explored gender, equality and social inclusion, highlighting the importance of integrating these principles into education reporting,” Chitiga said.

She added that the session covered foundational concepts, legal frameworks and practical steps for strengthening inclusion, with guidance from the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Chitiga also highlighted the relevance of key global goals such as SDG 3 on leaving no one behind, SDG 5 on gender equality, and SDG 13 on climate action, stressing the need for inclusive approaches.

“Learning from disasters such as Cyclone Idai, we must ask what happened to the affected children. Are they all back in the education system? Do we have continuous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms?” she said.

Meanwhile, facilitator Dr Mxolisi Sillar said the training aimed to strengthen collaboration between the media and civil society within the education sector.

“We discussed how to conduct GESI analysis as a tool for producing high-quality media content that drives gender transformation. With this collaborative effort, we envision a situation where all learners, regardless of their gender identities or backgrounds, enjoy equitable access to education,” he said.

Journalists also had the opportunity to explore various GESI tools to enhance their reporting on gender equality and social inclusion in the education sector.
