The City of Bulawayo’s drive to restore efficient refuse collection received a major boost on Friday after taking delivery of eight refuse compactors supplied by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
The vehicles, provided on a 12-month contract basis, are expected to ease the city’s ongoing challenges in waste collection, particularly in eastern suburbs where service delivery had been hampered by mechanical breakdowns of existing compactors.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Deputy Mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu said the additional equipment would help improve service delivery. “The compactors have come at a crucial time when the city has been struggling to maintain consistent waste collection services, especially in some of the eastern suburbs,” he said. “We are confident that this new fleet will make a significant difference as we work towards keeping Bulawayo clean.”
Before the new delivery, the city had only four operational compactors, while another four were undergoing servicing and 11 more were still in workshops awaiting repairs. City officials say Bulawayo requires at least 25 compactors to provide consistent and effective refuse collection across all residential and industrial areas.
Councillor Ndlovu was joined by Finance and Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Mpumelelo Moyo, Deputy Chairperson Octavious Dumisani Nkomo, Business and Investment Committee Chairperson Mxolisi Mahlangu, Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube, and Ms Khonzani Ncube, Chief Director in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, who represented the Ministry at the handover event.
