Malawi is actively securing alternative fuel supplies from neighboring Zimbabwe and Mozambique following significant disruptions to its primary supply route through Tanzania.
The disruption, caused by post-election violence in Tanzania, has intensified an already severe fuel crisis in Malawi.
The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) confirmed that the country's main fuel supply route, utilizing the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga in Tanzania, has faced major service challenges. Key figures in the disruption include:
120 fuel tankers have been blocked from crossing the Tanzania-Malawi border since October 29, 2025, according to reports from the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) and Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL).
48 million liters of diesel and petrol destined for Malawi have been delayed at the port of Tanga. Clearance has been affected due to the suspension of vessel berthing.
"Stakeholders in the fuel supply chain are, however, making every effort to ensure continuity of flow of fuel supplies into the country," MERA stated in a public update.

In response to the crisis, the Malawian government and its energy regulators have quickly moved to secure additional volumes through regional alternative sources.
Additional fuel has been secured at the ports of Beira and Nacala in Mozambique.
Supplies are also being sourced from the Msasa storage facility in Harare.
These measures aim to "minimise the impact of delays in clearing consignments from the Tanzanian ports," MERA confirmed.
The Malawian government has received assurances from the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania regarding cooperation. Tanzania has reportedly affirmed its commitment to helping facilitate the clearance of fuel destined for Malawi from the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga.
MERA has called for public cooperation and patience as fuel industry players work to stabilize fuel availability. The Authority also urged citizens to report any illegal fuel trading practices to the police or via their designated toll-free line and contacts.
